Long time no post, everyone! Today I'll be giving my brutally honest review of Tooth & Nail Cosmetics.

I
became aware of them via one of my favorite beauty bloggers, Tori from
Biohazardous Beauty. She said their highlighters were amazing, and they
are. I purchased a rainbow one from them back during the rainbow craze
and loved it, and again purchased their Sailor Moon collection sometime
last year.

Sadly, the highlighter arrived broken.

I emailed her about it, and Hannah Foote was quick to tell me how to fix it, but didn't offer a replacement. Well, all right, the eyeshadow palette was fine, so it was probably a fluke. I enjoyed the eyeshadows and highlighter a lot, so made another purchase late October to get some of her Nightmare Before Christmas highlighters.

After waiting over a month (they arrived early December), all three of the highlighters were broken, and no wonder, because they were wrapped TOGETHER in really thin bubble wrap. They destroyed each other. This time it was way worse, so I emailed Hannah about replacements.

They're SUPER dead.

She was again very quick to respond, and promptly offered me replacements with a new formula. Great! I sent her my address, she said they'd ship the following Monday, and all seemed to be good. These were so damaged and messy that I got rid of them.

I waited.

And waited.

And waited some more.

I emailed her again in the beginning of February, kindly apologizing for bugging her but wondering where my highlighters were? No response.

I waited two weeks, then tried again using her website contact form. Again, silence.

Another two weeks, and I found myself making my first Paypal case.

She was quick to respond then, promptly offering me replacements but asking for all my information again, even though she still had my emails (unless they were deleted), and I had it all there in the main text of the Paypal case, anyway. Nevertheless, I provided the information again.

And waited again.

Paypal sent an email letting me know that the case would be automatically closing in two days, and she must have gotten that, too, because she said she wasn't getting the Paypal responses but would still send me the replacements if I still wanted them/would give information AGAIN.

At this point, I was beyond done and just wanted my money back, so I escalated it to a Paypal claim and thought I'd be getting my money back, at least, and could put this disaster behind me.

Nope.

She demanded that I send the broken product before she'd refund my money, and I WOULD HAVE TO PAY THE SHIPPING. Even if I still had the highlighters, I'd have been pissed about that part. I tried getting Paypal to understand my situation, but nope. So now I'm out the highlighters AND my money, but I have reported her to Paypal and they're investigating, so hopefully there's justice there.

It's a real shame, because her products are honestly very good (although my fixed sailor moon highlighter also broke again when I took it on a
trip, so there's that, too. My big ones that are in a Z palette are
fine, though), but I just can't abide this level of customer service. I'd rather buy from Lime Crime (who were very kind when replacing a broken item and actually followed through with it...).Lesliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02597624779056521624noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1790242155325514751.post-40937639589100242962015-05-11T13:59:00.001-05:002015-05-11T13:59:33.222-05:00GUYS, MI VIDA LOCA IS COMING BACK

So, this was my first month getting the Ipsy Glambag. For those of you who haven't heard of it, Ipsy is a $10/month surprise bag filled with makeup samples and sometimes even full-sized products. It's about exploring new brands and things, and $10 is pretty cheap, so I decided I'd give it a go.

THE BAG. It's actually really cute.

The bag itself is surprisingly well put-together--I was
expecting something really flimsy and made of cheap plastic.

I was pretty upset about two of my items: The fragrance and the cleanser. I have really sensitive face issues and I have my skincare regimen down, so I refused to try the cleanser (at the risk of having a blowout) and will just give it to a friend. I gave it an abysmal review (Sorry, Hey Honey!) so that I won't get skincare products ever again. I also sent Ipsy a scathing email about receiving something I made sure to avoid in my "Profile," and they sent a really kind, professional reply, so I'm happy with that. Their suggestion, which is echoed by my friends who also use the bag, is to make sure I review all my product contents. Eventually the algorithm or whatever they use will figure out to never, ever give me skincare products.

Or fragrance. I stupidly said I liked fragrance in my profile, and I've changed it. The fragrance I got in my bag smelled like your standard floral, old lady something-or-other, but I'm sure other people would be thrilled to get such a large fragrance in a bag!

Everyone got a theBalm Cosmetics eyeshadow sample in their bag, which is super exciting, because I've heard great things about the brand and have been wanting to try them! This shadow met my expectations, having great pigmentation and applying as I would expect a high-quality eyeshadow to apply. I'm sad I got the "white bread" color, though--other people got a purple one! D:
A sorta "meh" item for me was the Starlooks lipgloss. I mean, it's
fine, it's a lipgloss, it's got this retro 90's frost thing going for
it, but I have other lipglosses. I will use this one. It didn't
shatter my world (like the MUFE Plexigloss, which I'll tell you aaall
about tomorrow!).

Now, the main item in my bag was a Hikari Cosmetics blush in "Tango."
At first I rolled my eyes and was like, "Oh. Blush. Yay./sarcasm,"
but it's actually rather good. The color is a lot more flattering
blended out than it appears in the pan, and it's a full-sized product!
At $15, it more than pays for the cost of the bag, which is pretty cool.
So, overall, I'm satisfied. Initially I was pissed about the skincare and the fragrance, because other people got fancy lipsticks, but you really do get a good value out of the bag. I'll see where the next few months take me! If you decide you want to try the Glam Bag out, please use my referral link ;)
I loveloveLOVE Sugarpill's Chromalust loose eyeshadows!
This post will focus on the red one, Asylum, because it's the best.
It's super sparkly, yet metallic, and is pure love. I
use Fyrinnae Pixie Epoxy as a base, then pack Asylum on over it. A
little goes a really long way, ao I think one jar will last
approximately forever.
There's really not much else that can be said about this product. It's
just a solid product. I even chose it as my eyeshadow of choice for my
wedding makeup, and practically everyone commented on how beautiful it
was! I'm sorry I have no more words, but seriously, this is the shit.

think, "Yeah. This is It."?
colors, or maybe I'm just not packing on enough color. But I PACK IT ON
SO MUCH, GAIZ.

Anyway, before I wax poetic any further, here's the swatch:

And I've tried So. Many. Times to use this on my face to show you for a
review, but it just will NOT photograph. It looks pretty enough in
person, but just will not pick up in a photo. It's a pity, especially
the Frostine shade, because it's actually got a pink chrome shift to it
that you can see in the pan, but never shows up on the eyeball. Again,
it might be user error, buuut I dunno. Honestly, after all done, the only color that really stands out is Hotsy Totsy, which a lot of beauty bloggers said was the problem shade of the palette! So I'm clearly just backwards or something.

So, there you have it! It's not really a palette I reach for often, but Spring is upon us and I'll be reaching for these kinds of shades more. I think I'll try mixing it with the Esperanza palette and see what happens!
As I was perusing Facebook yesterday, I came across this post
by Kat Von D. Basically, some people were calling out Sephora for her
lipstick shade called "Underage Red," demanding they pull it. Kat
defended the name, and said that she refuses to pull it. I always
thought of the name "Underage Red" as the kind of bright, crazy red that
teenagers are drawn to. So, Underage Red. I never thought of it in
the crazy, child-trafficking, sexual ways that other people are saying.
They're also comparing it to "Lolita," which is a shade I've always
adored not just because it's a great color, but because it makes me
think of the Japanese Lolita fashion movement.

Like this. Photo from here.

Kat Von D has never made any official statements about the Lolita lipstick, but the same people who call for the end for Underage Red make lewd statements about Lolita, too, and how it's about children being sexualized.

And that's totally fine if that's what the name means to you, because obviously nothing Kat says is going to change that, but just don't buy the lipstick. If these names bother you so much, NARS has much worse (Orgasm, Deep Throat), but that doesn't seem to offend anyone THAT much.

And I can't help but wonder if it's because NARS is a much bigger, more traditional, male-led company, whereas Kat Von D has complete control over her own, smaller makeup line. And she's an alternative woman who many people just flat out don't like. Because she helped that one guy cheat on America's sweetheart a while ago. And because she's covered in tattoos and lives in the gothic mansion of my dreams.

Feel free to discuss below! :) Sorry for no makeup pictures this week--Life has been kicking my ass recently.

As you probably know by now, I fucking love glitter. Glitter is my
lifeblood. So, I have no idea why I haven't purchased anything from Lit
Cosmetics before now. I just, I don't know. I have no excuses.

I picked up some holographic glitter in Superfly from Beautylish, and EEGADS is it magical. It's a gunmetally color that's all rainbows all the time. ALL THE TIME. CONSTANT RAINBOWAGE.

I used Fyrinnae Pixie Epoxy
instead of the glitter adhesive that Lit sells, and it worked just
fine. I'm still going to try out their adhesive sometime (will probably
get one of their kits next), but I went with what I had on-hand. Pixie
Epoxy is great, so I knew it would work. I just treated the glitter as
I would any other loose eyeshadow, and it worked as I expected. No
surprises!
I dunno why, but KVD doesn't do well with the Pixie Epoxy or something. Also wearing Meow Cosmetics foundation and KVD lipstick in Lovecraft. I also threw some random silver (Urban Decay?) in my inner crease, and another random Urban Decay in my outer Crease. I have all the Vice palettes on-hand for such things.
It's my favorite spring polish, but it's not PERFECT. I've had to reapply it to my nails multiple times because they keep popping off. My husband thinks my base coat has gone bad, and he may be right. The nails I did sans base coat have done much better, and I've been having this same problem with other polishes recently.

I've also been trying out Lucky 13's Elemental Ward top coat, which I enjoy quite a bit. It smells and acts like Seche Vite, but it doesn't goop up like Seche Vite does. I've gone through so many bottles of that shit because it would solidify and goop up super fast. It looks like I've found an alternative! It has an adorable D-20 on it, too, which is great.

I recently found out about Lime Crime's security breach hack shit, and have decided that I'm pretty much done with the company. I really do love their new eyeshadow palette a LOT, and will continue using it and all the other products I have from them, but I just don't think I can continue to support a brand that treats its customers so shittily. I was going to do three more reviews, one of their eye primer (great), velvetines (which are also really great..), and the Geradium lipstick which is awful, but I'm going to refrain. I might do the Geradium one so you can see how bad it is.

I think the company has potential to be really great, because they have awesome products (some of the lipsticks leave a little to be desired), but it suffers from a CEO who serves her own agenda and not that of her customers. Their website's response was pretty good, though, so maybe there's hope for growth here. But there's still a lot of other shady things about the company, and I don't want to have to preface all my reviews with disclaimers about the brand's controversy, which I almost did for my two reviews this week.

Is anyone else torn about this? I really like their products, but don't want to give them money until they shape up as a company, y'know? Ugh!

Also, in case anyone is agonizing over wanting the Venus palette but you don't want to buy Lime Crime, there are some shades in Urban Decay Vice 3 that are really comparable, which I can make a post about later this week!Lesliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02597624779056521624noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1790242155325514751.post-7187953626567332542015-03-04T08:00:00.000-06:002015-03-04T08:00:09.539-06:00Lime Crime Retrofuturist Review ~
So remember when I said I'd review Lime Crime's Retrofuturist like a year ago? WELL HERE IT IS!

Lime Crime pretty much has me with its purple case and holographic unicorns. Yes, HOLOGRAPHIC UNICORNS. WHAT MORE COULD I EVER WANT IN A LIPSTICK?!

Packaging aside, this lipstick is pretty good.

Lime Crime Retrofuturist

I mean, I don't have really high standards when it comes to lipstick. Generally all I ask is that it look good on me and last at least until I use my lips for something. I've tried various primers and voodoo methods for getting lipstick to stay forever (but I heard about some sorcery involving blotting and powder, so I'll get back to you on that), and I just can't get it to work out. I guess I could re-apply it after lunch, but let's be honest with ourselves here, I'm too lazy for that.

I really liked how creamy this one was, though.

Anyway, Lime Crime's lipstick met my expectations, and even exceeded them a bit in how creamy it was. It looks dreadful after a meal, though, but that's likely due to the fact that I don't use any lipliner or primer at all. I hate when I have the dreaded Lipstick Outline and nobody bothers to tell me about it.

Like with pretty much all lipsticks ever, you're going to get the best
results if you regularly exfoliate and moisturize. I use Lush's lip
scrub in Mint Julips and their Lip Service lip balm afterwards.
You can also google how to make a simple lip scrub, but I've already
established that I'm lazy. I also like that the scrubs from Lush are
edible.

But yeah, there's only so much you can say about a red lipstick. This
is a good one. Is it the BEST ONE EVAR? No. Liquid lipsticks are
better if you want something that lasts a long time, but this lipstick tube has a goddamn holographic unicorn on it.

forever, but instead I'm just going to dump a bunch of pictures on you. Keep in mind that this is also an experiment in photography, since I'm new to this whole Being a Serious Blogger thing, so please let me know which pictures work for you and which don't!

There you have it, folks! I used Aura, Shell, Rebirth, Venus, Muse, and a mixture of Muse and Icon in my outer crease. I used Kat Von D Tattoo Liner (it's good shit) aaaand Dior Browstyler for mah brows (it's pretty much magic in a pencil). I'm also wearing Meow Cosmetics Pampered Puss foundation in Inquisitive Sphynx and I'll have you know that I have redness bullshit and these pictures were taken roughly ten hours after applying. I'm going to do a review on that shit next, because it's seriously The Best.

I also need to start using mascara, I guess, because my lashes look pretty shitty in the photos, but guys I CANNOT DO MASCARA. I've tried like ten different kinds, from drugstore to high-end, and my eyeballs are always like "WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING THIS HURTS REALLY BAD LET'S WATER A WHOLE LOT WHILE YOU'RE DRIVING SO YOU WRECK AND DIE YOU HEARTLESS BITCH."

I wear contacts. I have blinking/moisture issues.

So if you have any recommendations for people with super sensitive eyeballs I'd love to hear about it! Also, please let me know if my blog name is stupid because after agonizing over it for hours I just ended up with Leslie Pwny. Cuz my name is Leslie and I like pwning.
The Venus palette from Lime Crime is seriously great. No, really. It's my
go-to palette for when I'm feeling "ughwhatthefuckdoIputonmyeyeballstoday." The colors blend
and work so well together, with so little effort, that I can be falling asleep at my vanity and make the most amazeballs look with this and not even have to think about it that hard. And that PACKAGING. It's perfection. I'm all for having more ART on my palettes!

You know how some palettes have colors that are all over the place, which is great, but you have to mix and match from other palettes to get something that looks legit? Not so with Venus. These are all meant to play together. Sometimes I'll use Bondage from Vice 3 in my inner crease, but that's when I'm getting really extra crazy fancy.

The colors have a good amount of staying power, except for Aura and Shell. They fade pretty quickly, so I pack them on more than usual, but using a white sticky base (I use one from Lunatick Labs) over your normal primer helps. The other shades have the longevity you'd expect from the price point (again, use some primer, but I feel like if you're spending $42 on an eyeshadow palette you're prooobably using primer anyway).

But here, take a look at some swatches:

Gorgeous, amirite? I typically just go, from inner crease to outer lid,
as follows: Aura, Shell, Rebirth, Venus, Muse, with Icon in my
crease. Sometimes if I'm feeling REALLY fancy and on top of things I'll
use EVERY COLOR IN THE PALETTE, but let's be honest here. That's
happened, like, once. And was the first day I had the palette. And,
I'm not gonna lie, I don't really use Divine ever. It's most likely for
blending, but most days I'm too lazy for that.

Here's me rocking the Venus palette at the office today:

What!? You ask. But Leslie, you have great brushes and high quality eyeshadows and you've never HAD pinkeye before, sooo what gives?

I don't know! I just don't know. I opened up my Ariel palette one day last week (hadn't touched it in a year) and went to town, and then the day after I opened up my Vice palette which I also hadn't touched in a year, and I guess there was some bacteria in there. It also didn't help that I don't wash my eye brushes nearly as dutifully as I wash my face brushes.

But guys, GUYS, it was the most awful two days ever. My eye was super red and it HURT. SO. BAD. Even closing my eyes didn't help the pain. It hurt so much to blink that I and everyone else thought it was a stye, but no! MY MAKEUP HAD INFECTED ME AND CAUSED ME PAIN. I laid in bed with a warm cloth pressed to my eye and cried.

After a terrifying three days in which I didn't wear any makeup or contacts, I figured the worst was over and I could go back to wearing makeup and contacts. DEAR GOD WAS I WRONG. I could only stand to have my contacts in for a good 10 minutes before I gave up and took them out. My husband laughed and said I should throw them out, but they're expensive and there's a good week left in them.

My eye feeling better, I put on my makeup (again using my old palettes, I don't know, I'm stupid I guess), and around 2:00 PM at work the telltale signs of incoming pinkeye were present. Not again, I thought. NOT. A. GAIN.

I quickly took my makeup off when I got home and, yep, now my OTHER EYE was turning red and looking irritated. I at least had the intelligence to clean my eye brushes before I put makeup on again, so I was at a loss. Had my EYE SHADOW done this to me? It would KEEP doing this to me?! I...would I have to throw my precious palettes out?! They were only a year old! I loved the colors and couldn't find them anymore!

TO THE INTERNET!

And lo, Wayne Goss had the sacred answer. I must spray the bejeezus out of my palettes with 90% isopropyl alcohol. And it WORKED, my dears, it WORKED! I sprayed the living shit out of my palettes, and now I'm two days of wearing my old eyeshadow with not a pink eye in sight!

Moral of the story: I should be spraying my makeup with isopropyl alcohol fairly often.

Also, sorry for the lack of posts. I have a bunch of pictures I've taken, but I've been having a weird quarterlife crisis lately and just haven't had the drive to do much of anything except work, eat ice cream, and cuddle with the husband. I'll try to be better!Lesliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02597624779056521624noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1790242155325514751.post-51087661160250142252014-03-07T08:45:00.002-06:002014-03-07T08:45:31.059-06:00Some Magical Metal to Brighten Your Friday

OMG GAIZ, GAIZ. The sound of this band is akin to unicorns shooting bubblegum lasers out of their mouths, and that bubblegum death sounds like beautiful music. And the unicorns are black with rainbow manes full of sparkly metal shurikens.

Seriously, just listen.

I just finished the Divergent series last week, and the ending was
terrible. Not omigod-you-can't-do-that-to-the-main-character terrible,
just plain terrible. I'm okay with characters dying, or else how could I
love A Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones)? I have high hopes that the movie
trilogy will change the third book entirely. You heard me, Summit!
PLEASE DO WHATEVER YOU WANT TO THE ENDING OF THIS SERIES. Whatever you
come up with will be infinitely better than what actually happens, I'm
sure.

Rambling aside, ERMAGERD GUYS DID YOU SEE THAT SEPHORA IS MAKING MAKEUP BASED ON THE SERIES?!

AGH! I mean, the colors kinda don't make sense, but overall I'm excited. Should they have had someone actually research the book first before developing this? Yes. I mean, where's a bright red lip gloss to symbolize Tris wearing crazy makeup when she becomes Dauntless? No? And what about the palettes representing the factions? I see Dauntless/Candor Black and Erudite Blue, but no Abnegation Gray (the whole palette is rather Abnegation-y neutral), Candor White, or Amity Red and Yellow. The titles are good, though.

All that nitpicking aside, you can bet I want this so hard. I'm a sucker for packaging, and I don't have any neutral palettes or cheek palettes, so this set is actually a really good value for me. And the brush has the "Divergent" logo on it, which is cool.

Are you gonna be grabbing this set when you can? :D

And since this is still on my blog's first page, let's check out some SUPER BELATED PRODUCT PHOTOS!

Overall, I was very pleased with this set. EXTREMELY PLEASED, even. I don't use any of the glosses, they were pretty terrible, and the brush has fallen apart after a year, but I still use the blush end because why not? It's a good brush, even if the whole 'dual-sided' thing didn't quite work out.

The blush palette was exciting at the time because I didn't have any, but now it's rather meh. The eyeshadows overall are what you'd expect from Sephora, but the shades on the left (Diverge, Transform, Choose) are pretty much UD Moondust shadows, which is SO EXCITING. I literally use Transform every day in my inner crease. Erry day. It's that lovely.
Everything pisses my face off. I can't wear any powder whatsoever, and my quest for the perfect primer and foundation is ongoing.

I made a post two years ago about my epiphany moment with Burt's Bees, and I'm here to say that I was wrong. Well, not completely wrong, but mostly wrong. Burt's Bees was of course better than what I had been using, but it still wasn't good for my face. It did a good job clearing up my redness, but it wasn't helping so much in the pimple department. It's only 95-99% natural, after all.

So there I was, my face STILL pissed off, and didn't know where to turn for better face care. I mean, Burt's Bees was the best I could find without having to make my own stuff at home! I'm pretty lazy, so that wasn't going to happen. What could I do now? Live with it?

No, my friends. I went to Lush.

This encompasses how I feel about Lush. If I were a better artist, the unicorn would be sparkly and be shooting the rainbows out of its eyes as lasers. But alas, MS Paint and clip art unicorn for you today. Yes, it has a penis.

Lush Cosmetics is the best thing that ever happened to my goddamn face. There's SO many products, and I can honestly say I've tried almost all of their moisturizers (still not sure which I like best), most of their cleansers, and can accurately say my face loves me. If only I'd stop putting makeup on it, then it would be completely blemish-free. But, c'mon. That's not gonna happen.

Here's my LUSH regimen:

1. In the morning, I slather my face with 9 to 5 in the shower and then skip steps 2-4. This saves a lot of time since I don't have any makeup to remove.
2. In the evening, my first step is to take my eye makeup off and wet my face (I use Neutrogena extra sensitive remover cotton pad thingies).

3. I then get out my Clarisonic and smother it with a good helping of Ultrabland. After my Clarisonic's done and its white brush head is completely the color of my foundation (good god that was all on my FACE?!), I wipe my face with a damp cloth until it comes up clean (even MOAR foundation omg face I'm so sorry).
4. Exfoliate the shit out of my face using Ocean Salt.
5. Spritz Eau Roma toner all over my face (about 3-4 spritzes).
6. Cover my face in the holy grail known as the Full of Grace bar and massage that shit in.
7. If I have any problem areas (usually my chin and eyebrows--I think my beloved Dior eye pencil breaks me out nooo), I cover them with some Grease Lightning.
8. Slather face with moisturizer. I've tried Celestial, Imperialis, Enzymion, Vanishing Cream, Cosmetic Lad, and Gorgeous, and am currently using a mix of Imperialis and Enzymion. Vanishing Cream broke me out (yeah, it doesn't really make sense), and I'm going to give Celestial another go when I run out of Enzymion/Imperialis. I really don't think Gorgeous is different enough from the others to justify $90 for a moisturizer.

BONUS steps for smexy lips:

I also slather a bunch of the Mint Julips on my lips to exfoliate them, and then cover them with Lip Service. I have buttery lips in the morning! Until I put lipstick on. Sigh, it's a process.

I also love how their packaging showcases these dueling rabbits.
Because animal cruelty sucks. Unless it's a duel, then that's out of
our hands.

Yes, dear readers, it is true. After four losses in a row playing League of Legends, the Mister and I decided that we wanted to experience the outside world and partake in delicious food made by other people. Had I not taken two hours to get ready, perhaps the restaurant wouldn't have been full when we got there.

But at least I looked fabulous. I'm wearing Bonfire Spirits by Fyrinnae on my lids, with a pinch of Strike from Urban Decay's Vice 2 palette on my inner crease. My lips feature Lime Crime's Retrofuturist, which I'll make a lengthier review about sometime this week.

Here's a closer look at the makeups (forgive the abysmal lighting,
Missouri has been overcast for the last month and I'm so done with it):

I love Fyrinnae's eyeshadows so much! They're so, so SPARKLY! But they're taking over my vanity. It's overrun with little jars of eyeshadow samples that I really, reaaally need to press.

That's it for today! Stay sparkly, my friends!

I have recovered from my two-year funk, and I am READY to bring you the awesome content once more! I've renamed the blog Leslie Pwny (so I'm like a pony, but with more pwnage), as the whole "Metal Marshmallow" thing never made sense. Also, the focus will sadly no longer be on Metal. I'm going to focus instead on the beauty/fashion aspect of my life, but will still keep it Metal with random music videos and announcements that excite me. I won't be reviewing albums seriously anymore, but if I think something is awesome I'll tell you about it as coherently as possible (maybe). The blog is going to focus more on me personally, so I shouldn't abandon it so easily this time.

I'm also going to enter into a blog-partnership with my friend Carissa, and a new blog will likely be created from that. BUT, seeing as how this is somehow still getting pageviews, I'll continue to do this as well.

I'm going to do some major swatching this weekend, and you can see a teaser photo below!

Also, what kind of makeup looks would you guys like me to do? I'm open to suggestions!Lesliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02597624779056521624noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1790242155325514751.post-4954796260902059892012-06-11T10:42:00.001-05:002012-06-11T10:42:10.642-05:00Kat Von D Travel Eyeshadows!

Oh, Kat Von D. I wanted to love her new travel-sized eyeshadow
palettes, but the colors just don't excite me. They're the perfect size
for travel, though, and are a nice fraction of the price of her
full-sized palettes ($20 compared to $36). The packaging is awesome, too. It's got a cool design on the cover,
and has a rubberized texture that feels good in the hand. The shadows
are also the same size and pigmentation as what you find in her
full-sized palettes. So, there's that.

The Little Sinner palette.

First, let's talk about the Little Sinner palette. The colors are very matte, which is a bit strange since most of Kat's palettes have super sparkly shadows. Also, what in the world is going on with the colors here? Red, green, white, and NUDE? Hardly Sinner-like. Where's the black? WHY IS THERE NO BLACK?! Seriously, these colors make ZERO sense. I'd imagine a travel-sized Sinner palette to have white, grey or silver, purple (red or blue would also be acceptable), and black. But perhaps people would stop buying the full-sized Sinner palette if the colors of this one actually made sense. Oh no, we can't have that. We don't want new buyers up in here, no way!

I was also disappointed that the white color (Swansong) seems to be different from the Swansong used in her super rainbow Mi Vida Loca palette. Swansong in the Loca palette is a goooorgeous white with purple iridescence. Very noticeable. But the Swansong here is just...white. I checked.

The Little Saint palette.

Next, there's the Little Saint palette. This is the one I ended up purchasing (though I never buy any of Kat's Saint products), because the colors are just better. There's blue, purple, bronze, and nude again. Because this is the Saint palette, the nude color makes sense (so I won't quibble with it). I also surprisingly like the bronze color. The purple and blue are what really sold me, though, and I'm glad I bought it. It's still not the ideal, as I still have to bring along a black and silver eyeshadow from another brand, but oh well.

BOTTOM LINE, The Saint palette makes for a good travel smoky eye if you bring along your own black eye shadow, which I did. Drugstores have lots of tiny black/silver duos, which would finish this palette off nicely.

The palette is quite sturdy and travels extremely well--it survived being tossed around in my makeup bag while I was on vacation. So, if you want Kat Von D eyeshadows for your next vacation, pick one of these up. They're of the same quality and great pigmentation you'd expect from any Kat palette. The colors are just weird.

<3

I loooove it! I
can't stop listening to it! My review is also featured at The Metal Pit.

<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">I wish I had found German Folk/Symphonic
Metal band Lyriel before now. Their
newest album, “Leverage”, gives me serious eargasms. Lyriel describe themselves as ranging “from
dreamy ballads, a pinch of medieval tunes, to heavy rock songs with elements of
classical and Celtic folk music.” This
is very accurate, and the mixture of all these elements on “Leverage” is
extremely polished and thoroughly enjoyable to listen to. The album finds a great balance of metal,
amazing vocals, folky string instruments, and anthemic choruses. There’s always something interesting going on
here; there’s never a dull moment in the instrumentation or vocals. Vocalist Jessica Thierjung sings equal parts
elf maiden and siren seductress, sometimes a mixture of the two.

<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
That said, fans of really heavy, fast metal
may not like Lyriel. Fans of
female-fronted metal, symphonic metal, and folk metal will most likely find a
lot to love here. I’d definitely give it
a try regardless, especially on a gloomy day.
The extremely anthemic choruses are sure to pick up your spirits and
make you bob your head in glee.

Voices In My Head (heaviest on the
album—there’s some harsh vocals!), The

It’s AMAZING), Aus Der Tiefe
(most folk-y of the album). They’re all
good, really.

Tom Regan of Burning Shadows asked me to review their upcoming album months ago, and I finally got around to it! It's also located at The Metal Pit.
I found a lot to like with their new album, but overall couldn't get
over the vocalist sounding like Danzig. But that's not to say you
shouldn't check them out, because you should! Support local Metal!

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
Burning Shadows are a power metal band
hailing from Washington, DC. Their
upcoming sophomore album, “Gather, Darkness!” is due for release in June 2012.

The opening instrumental, “Hymn to Sathanas”, takes me back to my Playstation
One RPG-playing days, which really sets my expectations for epicness! And the following track doesn’t disappoint,
opening with a classic Schaffer-esque anthemic intro. The guitar work is awesome, and I can definitely
hear some Jon Schaffer influences. Vocalist
Tom Davy reminds me of Glenn Danzig, which may be a good thing or a bad thing,
depending on your tastes.

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
Burning Shadows have arranged “Gather,
Darkness!” in an interesting way; the album only has three huge songs, but the
songs are divided up to make 11 tracks.
This is not so good for those of us who like to listen to our music on
shuffle, or if you don’t like hearing the same chorus for 15-or-so minutes. The storyline of the songs seems pretty epic,
though, if you like concept albums that tell a sweeping story.

<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
On
their website, Burning Shadows describe themselves as “inspired by American
power metal pioneers Iced Earth and Jag Panzer . . . Masterminds Tim Regan and
Greg Jones, rhythm and lead guitar, respectively, have been the steel core of
the band since its first days. Conservatory-trained drummer David Spencer
provides thunderous power from behind the drum kit. Tom Davy joined the band in
2009 on lead vocals, ready to crush the false and slay the weak with a soaring
vocal range that simply is not matched in the DC area.”

<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
I definitely agree with this (especially
the guitarists—they’re really great!) up until the vocalist’s alleged
range. He sings pretty much the exact
same way for the entire album, and with songs that are 15 minutes-ish long, no
variation in vocals makes things drag. A
few times I hear him in the background singing higher, but it’s mixed so far
behind the “regular” voice that it doesn’t add enough variation. But he sounds like he can do it.

Songs to listen to: Hymn to Sathanas, A New Dark Age, Man From
Myth (probably my favorite on the album), Kingdoms Fall, The Infamous Dawn
Drugstore foundations never get the color right, mineral foundations oxidize into bizarre colors, and almost everything breaks me out. Seriously, I can't even wear Bare Minerals Matte, which is supposed to be the "good" one if your skin is sensitive. If I put it on, I have a guaranteed pimple on my chin by the end of the night. Speaking of pimples, I've struggled with Acne and terrible redness in my cheeks and nose for ten years.

Finally, at twenty-two, I'm taking charge of my skin. And what I've found out is oh so simple: I've likely been allergic to everything I've been putting on my face for the last ten years. Once I started looking at ingredients of products I had been using, I found that known skin irritants were in all of them, especially the anti-acne ingredient salicylic acid. Could I have been GIVING myself acne and redness with the products I was putting on my face to ward them off?

Yes. Yes I was. And maybe you are, too. But the madness can end here, today, by switching to natural skincare products. It's really not that difficult or expensive, which is what had kept me using Neutrogena for those ten years. <strike>Most Target stores now have a "natural" section in their beauty department, and that's how I found Burt's Bees. I've been using their Sensitive skincare line (cleanser/daily moisturizer) for over a month now, and my face isn't RED anymore</strike>. It's still quite oily, and there's a shadow of a pimple on my chin, so perhaps it's not my Holy Grail of skincare. But it's a step in the right direction. Update: I'm going to make a part deux to this most, as I'm NOT using Burt's Bees anymore. It was MUCH better than Neutrogena, but it still gave my skin problems and I've stopped using it.

How To Figure Out If You're Pissing Off Your Skin:

Get a natural, sensitive-skin friendly cleanser and moisturizer. <strike>I recommend Burt's Bees because it's readily available at Target, but there are WAY more options out there. </strike>I can't stress enough that it needs to be natural, fragrance-free, and allergy-free. I used some Philosophy cleanser (supposedly the gentlest stuff for skin) and I had such a bad allergic reaction to it that my face was pretty much on fire. I must not have been the only one, as it is mysteriously not on sale anymore.

Cleanse and moisturize your skin morning (or afternoon, if you're nocturnal like me) and night, and, on days that you wear makeup, use a toner after cleansing. I like rosewater/glycerin toners (of course BB has one). They're pretty good at sucking up oil, too. You can try using it every night, but I haven't yet done the skin piss-off test with it. I imagine it doesn't irritate.

Don't think that because your face is oily you don't need moisturizer. Because you do. Morning and night. Everyone does. Except people that don't have issues with their skin, but we hate them.

If you have REALLY bad acne, get some Zapzyt benzoyl peroxide gel (found at most Wal Marts and drugstores). It doesn't have any irritating fillers. It's pretty drying, but if you use your moisturizer day and night you shouldn't get any dryness.

Try not to wear any foundation for a week. This may be impossible if you go out in public a lot, but try your best! Even just putting on powder may break you out! It did for me. I don't ever leave my house, so this step was simple to accomplish.

Once your face is looking pretty damn good, introduce your favorite foundation. If it pisses your skin off, you'll likely notice by the end of the night. My reactions always happen on my chin. Also, if you have bangs, forehead acne is just inevitable.

If that foundation pissed your skin off, wait for the reaction to clear up and try a new one.

And that's how it's done! I've been trying a new mineral foundation from Faerie Organic, and the lightest shade (Porcelain) is a beautifully perfect match! They sell samples for about five or six dollars, which made me happy. Also, I don't think it's breaking me out. I've only tried twice, though, and I still have some lingering kindof pimples (red dots that are under my skin) from a blowout after trying a translucent powder from Physicians Formula. The irritant in question must be Lauroyl Lysine, because it's also in Bare Minerals. So, avoid that.

As for liquid foundation, I use Clinique Acne Solutions (in shade "Fresh Alabaster" of course, and it's pretty yellow until blended in with a brush) on days where I'll be out for a long time, and I worry that the salicylic acid in it might be pissing my skin off. But my skin doesn't blow out nearly as bad as when using Bareminerals/Physicians Formula powders, so I'll keep using it. I also just purchased the much-raved about Tarte Smooth Operator tinted moisturizer in shade 00, and I'll be sure to update this with my results.

UPDATE: Tarte's tinted moisturizer seems to pass the skin piss-off test. It blends in nicely but doesn't have great coverage, so I top it off with a bit of powder. So far so good. The Tarte stuff has a super gross clay/sunscreen smell to it for the first 30 minutes or so you wear it, though :( Especially if you go outside!

I hope this helps, as my quest for clear skin has been quite successful. Share your quests with me, recommend some foundations, talk about what hasn't worked for you, give me some tips! :D
Nightwish and Epica are BOTH having tours in the States this fall, which I'm super excited about. Nightwish will actually be hitting my home city of St. Louis, which bands seldom do. For whatever reason, Nightwish loves little St. Louis and makes a point to visit us every tour. I'll be seeing them (and Epica) in Atlanta for Progpower USA,
but I'll probably hit my local show, too. I'm not sure about making
the trek to Kentucky or Chicago to see Epica a second time. Their set
at ProgPower probably can't be beat, so I'll skip out on that. Unless
Simone does another makeup contest and I win. :)

Speaking of Epica, they just released a new music video! It's very artistic and really showcases the message of their album. Watch it! I love Simone's makeup when the oil-stuff is about to consume her. Such pretty blue eyeshadow and crazy curly designs!

Nightwish also just released a teaser trailer for their long-awaited film, Imaginaerum. The album has already been released and it's great (albeit short), and I'm quite impressed with how the film looks so far. It definitely has the Burton feel to it that Tuomas wanted. That being said, I'm fairly certain there won't be an American release in theaters. I know, it's sad :( But I'm just not sure how an American release would be pulled off. We're just NOW finally getting Miyazaki films in theaters, and Disney has had his stuff for yeeeaaars.

And that's all, folks! Hopefully you'll be able to catch Nightwish and Epica this fall!

Lesliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02597624779056521624noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1790242155325514751.post-26290688662190143342012-04-19T13:01:00.000-05:002012-04-19T20:30:36.073-05:00Interview with Zuberoa Alvarnez of Diabulus in Musica!
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: center;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; margin-bottom: 6pt;">
Zube: DiM was born
in 2006. I started the project because I wanted to develop my own ideas (I sang
in another band where I didn’t write the songs) and express myself through the
music I liked: metal and classical. We all knew each other from the local metal
scene of Pamplona and most of us were friends before creating DiM. After
winning some contests we decided to record our first album, Secrets, which was released by Metal
Blade Records in 2010. It received many great reviews and we had the chance to
play in big fests. Now we have just signed a contract with Napalm Records and
our new album The Wanderer has just
been released by them on February the 29th.

<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; margin-bottom: 6pt;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
Since your first album, “Secrets”, you’ve
signed with Napalm Records. How has that
changed your overall experience compared to your first label?

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; margin-top: 0.1pt;">
Napalm is much more oriented to our music
style than Metal Blade, so I think the main difference is on promotion; I mean,
we are more likely to reach new fans that may like our music than we were
before. We are very happy because we think that we are where we have to be now.

<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
What was the creative process like for
writing songs for “The Wanderer”? Was
the whole band involved?

<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
Yes. Xabi and Alex couldn’t be involved in
the writing process of ‘Secrets’ because they joined us later. We started all
together with the main idea of ‘The Wanderer’, even before ‘Secrets’ was
released.

<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; margin-bottom: 12pt;">
Regarding the writing process, we
decided that we would write a conceptual album, so the first thing we did
together was to think about the story and which feelings we wanted to express
on each song. That’s the way we started to work. We did alone our own song or
songs and then forwarded it to the other band members. It was in that moment
when we started to work together again, to arrange the songs until we
considered they were completely finished. After this, we started with the
recordings in our home studios.

<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; margin-bottom: 12pt;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
You’ve mentioned in previous interviews that
“The Wanderer” is a concept album. Can
you tell us more about the concept and how the band came up with it?

<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
We only knew we wanted to tell an ‘intense’
story that gave us the chance to express different feelings. Then we started to
think more or less what each song would tell and after that I started to write
the lyrics.

<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
The
concept talks about a girl who has something ‘special’, ‘different’,
‘spiritual’ and somehow feels isolated. She wanders searching for a place where
she can finally be accepted.

<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div class="MsoPlainText" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; margin-top: 0.1pt;">
The
whole story is an allegory of Mother Earth, Humanity and Corruption and the
shock between people who stay ‘pure’ (and linked with nature) and modern
society. It is not easy to reconcile this way of being with all the changes
that society is suffering, and above all, with human corruption. All these
‘special’ people are unfortunately starting to disappear and in my view, they
are the last hope to change the World. It is so sad that human beings are
forgetting where we come from!

<div class="MsoPlainText" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; margin-top: 0.1pt;">

<div class="MsoPlainText" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; margin-top: 0.1pt;">
It
is also kind of odd that after thinking about the concept, I’ve seen many
artists talking about something similar in their works. It seems that many
people perceive that society is not walking towards the right way… It is clear
that some of us have this kind of 'apocalyptic' thoughts… Maybe that’s a good
sign and we can still change?

<div class="MsoPlainText" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; margin-top: 0.1pt;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
“The Wanderer” is your second studio album,
and your first with a music video!
Describe the experience of making a video! (I also loooove your outfits! :D Are they from your personal wardrobe?)

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: center;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

It was very funny but also exhausting! We
recorded everything in one day and a half and in four different places.
Besides, it was really cold that day, it was raining and I had to walk in the
forest barefoot. The recording in the quarry was also very funny. There were
people working inside and they didn’t believe that a band was going to record a
video-clip inside. They were really surprised when they saw 4 guys in black
leather and a drum-kit, and a girl in white running in the cave hahah they
thought I was a spirit or something paranormal! haha

<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
Thanks! The outfits are mine, yes. Taken from here and
there… I did my own disguise heheh

<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
Many folks are saying that this is a rough
time for the music industry, and one band in particular has stated that their
debut album next month will be released on USB stick instead of Compact Disc. What is your reaction to this?

<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
The industry is falling down or at least
changing, that’s for sure, so it will have to adapt to the new times if it
wants to continue alive. I’m not sure about which would be the best thing to
do, but what I’m sure about it’s that new generations don’t have the same view
about music than we had before. On the other hand, we are lucky that in the
metal scene fans are still very faithful and most of them still prefer to buy
cd’s. I think cd’s will disappear anyway and all of us will have to adapt to
the new technologies. Anyway, being cd’s, USB sticks or whatever, I only hope
that fairer times will come for musicians because nowadays it’s really
difficult for most of us to continue making music due to the lack of money and
support…

<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
As a female, I know first-hand that there is
still much sexism in metal. How does that
affect you and other women you know in the genre?

<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
As you say there is still not much, but
unfortunately too much sexism in the metal scene. I’ve learnt not to give
importance to some comments, but sometimes it’s really hard to deal with some
people… and not only men, that’s very sad!

<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
There are many things that bother me. For example, in
general, the ‘girl’ in the band is always considered only as ‘the girl
singing’, but no more than that, when a lot of us are founders of the band,
composers, producers, etc… And there’s no need to say that besides of that, we
are most of the time criticized by our physical appearance. It seems that this
is the primordial condition to be successful… My God, we are musicians! I don’t
like neither the so called tag ‘female metal’. It seems that we still live in a
world apart. We cannot make metal, but ‘female metal’… what the hell is that?
For what I know there are girls singing in many different metal bands, from
rock to death! I suppose that this is the reason why in big metal fests there
is only place for 1 or 2 ‘female metal bands’... To be honest, I sometimes feel
embarrassed of being a part of this ‘circus’… If you take a look to other music
styles, these kind of things don’t happen…

<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
What was it like to perform at Metal Female
Voices Fest? It sounds like a dream come
true!

<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; margin-bottom: 12pt;">
Zube: It is! Playing MFVF was an amazing experience, we shared many
great moments with fans, organizers, stuff and other bands. We are very
grateful that Phil gave us that chance. There is a very special atmosphere
there, a very direct contact with the audience. Besides, everybody at
Oktoberhallen is so lovely! We cannot wait to come back for the 10th
anniversary, it will be a blast!

<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

and the band while touring?

<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; margin-bottom: 12pt;">
Definitely!

Not really. I only try to relax and do my
regular exercises to warm up the voice. I like to be alone to do that, but
unfortunately that’s not possible in most of the venues.

to walk and walk for hours in the mountains or forest. I also love animals,
especially dogs. I have three and I love to take them with me for the long

from metal and classical what I like the most is World or ethnic music, folk
